There are several types of maintenance strategies are available which organization uses as per their requirements. In this blog, we will know about corrective maintenance. So, without wasting any time let’s begin.
What is corrective maintenance?
Corrective maintenance is a type of reactive maintenance in which asset failure has occurred and now it needs to be returned to its working and functional condition.
In the maintenance, tasks are identified in order to repair machines. Most of the time corrective maintenance strategy is used on those assets which are non-critical to the company. Either these assets will be changed once it is a breakdown or they will be repaired at a very low cost. However, this scenario can be changed because it has been seen that a corrective maintenance strategy can lead to unexpected breakdowns and costly maintenance.
What are the benefits of Corrective maintenance?
The benefits of Corrective maintenance are discussed below:
Simple process – The process of corrective maintenance is simple when any machine comes for maintenance after doing all the paperwork machine maintenance is performed.
No planning required – Since the process is simple there is no rocket science to understand just simple work. It is one of the biggest advantages of corrective maintenance that you do not have scheduled maintenance.
Low short-term cost – When you use assets and utilize corrective maintenance strategy it has a low short-term cost for maintenance.
What are the drawbacks of Corrective maintenance?
The drawback of corrective maintenance are discussed below:
Increased asset failure chances – Asset failure can be very expensive if the asset is critical for the organization. As we said in this strategic asset is used until failure occurs which can be lethal for business.
Unpredictable – The corrective maintenance makes assets unreliable and unpredictable which can be dangerous for business. However, this practice can be used on non-critical assets of the organization.
Decreased equipment life – When an asset is not given maintenance on time and waits for its failure then it starts impacting other parts of the machines as well. This makes asset life and shorted and asset life decreases. As a result, the asset is not used to its full capacity and it return on investment decreases as well.
Ins simple words, it can be expensive because corrective maintenance does not focus on the root cause of the problem. It just rectifies the problem and no proper resolution is provided. Therefore, there can several equipment failures can occur.
What are the other different types of maintenance?
Mainly different types of maintenance can be divided into two main categories that are proactive and reactive maintenance. Proactive maintenance is that maintenance in which maintenance is provided to asst before any type of failure occurs. The example of proactive maintenance is preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance. In this type of maintenance, the asset is scheduled for maintenance once it is not working as per the expectation or any failure is a sign is noticed by employees.
Whereas reactive maintenance in which maintenance is provided after the failure occurs. The example of reactive maintenance is corrective maintenance and emergency maintenance.
Proactive maintenance makes assets’ reliability and performance can be predicted. In reactive maintenance, assets are not reliable and their performance is unpredictable.
Proactive maintenance increases asset life by providing maintenance on time whereas reactive maintenance used assets till failure occurs. As a result, decreased asset life.
What is the difference between corrective maintenance and emergency maintenance?
The difference between corrective maintenance and emergency maintenance are discussed below:
- Breakdown maintenance is used on asset which is totally non function whereas corrective maintenance is used on asset which has some part which is nonfunctioning.
- Emergency maintenance is considered to be most expensive and corrective maintenance is less expensive.
- Emergency maintenance is used on assets which are high priority whereas corrective maintenance is used on asset which have low priority.
If organizations want to use corrective maintenance, then they can use it on assets that are not essential and critical for running day-to-day operations. For day-to-day operations organizations must utilize any type of maintenance management software like proactive, etc. otherwise it will impact the productivity of the organization. The outcome will decrease the reputation of the organization might also suffer.
