The main principles of daily facial skincare at home. How to choose the right care products. Step by step instructions: how to take care of your skin.
One can endlessly argue that a face is a mirror of our age and health … This is certainly true – however, there are more pragmatic reasons why complex facial care should be a mandatory routine every day.
It is important to understand that daily facial care is not only about taking care of the current condition of the skin: cleansing, nourishment, moisturizing, and strengthening. This is also serious work for the future. Properly selected facial skincare allows you to fight the signs of premature aging, dehydration, the appearance of fine wrinkles, ptosis (sagging skin), and hyperpigmentation.
The basic rules for facial skincare can be quite simple and easy to do. If you do not know where to start a well-organized and systematic facial, we first recommend that you check your daily routines with our checklist.
The selection of beauty products is often inspired by the general description of their actions: a cleansing gel, a moisturizer, a firming serum – or by searching for specific ingredients in a composition, taking into account the needs of the skin. However, the same main ingredient may need different complementary ingredients, depending on the skin type.
For example, CeraVe cleansing gels: one for oily and normal skin and the other for dry, “uneven” skin will have fundamentally different auxiliary components. The first forms an intense cleansing lather, while the second has a soft creamy gel texture.
Home facial skincare simply has to be daily and comprehensive – regardless of life situations, fatigue, or the surrounding environment. Even on vacation, a business trip, after-parties, or children’s parties, you need to set aside time for the usual beauty routine, without missing a single stage.
A properly selected facial treatment can consist of certain stages, such as:
- Moisturizing / Nutrition / Firming
Additionally, it is recommended to practice several times a week:
- exfoliation (getting rid of dead skin cells) using, for example, a scrub or peeling;
- the use of cosmetic masks, matched to the individual needs of the skin.
Now let’s take a closer look at how to select cosmetic products depending on the type and needs of the skin.
As we already wrote, this is one of the most important factors on which the effectiveness of the product you have chosen and its benefits for the skin will largely depend on.
Oily skin: Intensive cleansing, soothing and moisturizing products are recommended. You can give preference to products that do not “clog” the pores – usually, this can be understood by the mark “non-comedogenic” on the packaging or in the product description.
Dry skin: Look for intensely moisturizing, restorative, and firming products. Your goal: to restore the skin’s protective barrier and prevent moisture from evaporating from its surface.
Combination skin: for such skin, products should be selected that will help maintain the skin’s hydrolipid barrier without clogging the pores in the T-zone.
Normal skin: In this case, it is advisable to take care not to overdry the skin. You can select products that strengthen the protective functions of the skin and help prevent dehydration.
When choosing the right products, you can be guided by the information on which skin type the product is intended for, indicated on the package. After all, manufacturers are trying to create cosmetics specifically taking into account the needs of one type of skin or another.
When choosing products for facial care at home, you should pay attention to the composition of the product of interest. Each component has a specific role to play: for example, some ingredients may be responsible for the texture of the formula, while others allow the product to show its caring properties.
Here are a few components that we recommend taking a closer look at:
Ceramides: Essential lipids that are responsible for the integrity and functionality of the skin’s protective barrier.
Hyaluronic acid: an irreplaceable moisturizing ingredient that penetrates the epidermis and retains moisture in the skin for a long time.
Glycerin: A substance that actively attracts water, helps to retain it in the skin, and supports the skin’s protective functions.
Niacinamide: A water-soluble vitamin B3 that has a soothing effect on the skin.
After we have figured out what the right facial care can be and what points you should pay attention to when choosing cosmetics, let’s go through all the stages of step-by-step facial skincare.
An obligatory stage, which is aimed at getting rid of the skin of make-up residues, particles of dirt and household dust, traces of sweat … Even if you “practically do not makeup”, we do not recommend skipping this stage and starting right away with cleansing.
Recommended product: CeraVe Moisturizing Cleansing Micellar Water. It is formulated with ceramides, which strengthen the protective barrier and prevent excess moisture loss, and niacinamide, which soothes the skin.
Daily facial skincare involves cleansing twice a day: not only in the evening but also in the morning. And if evening cleansing seems natural to us, then morning cleansing can raise questions … It is necessary to remove traces of nighttime skin activity and prepare it for further morning care.
Recommended remedy: CeraVe Cleansing Foam for normal to dry skin. Its formula includes ceramides and amino acids important for the skin. The foaming cream not only cleanses but also moisturizes the skin without disturbing its natural protective barrier.
It is important here not only to complete the cleansing of the skin but also, if necessary, to restore its hydrolipid balance. This can be done with the help of a toner or light lotion, enriched with additional caring ingredients according to the needs of the skin.
At this stage, we can usually apply a treatment that fulfills one of these functions – depending on the individual needs of our skin. It is important to apply day and night creams in a timely manner, do not think that this is just a marketing ploy.
It is recommended to use a day cream in the morning, as it can provide the skin with long-term hydration and protection from aggressive external influences. And night may be the best time for nourishing or revitalizing creams to work.
As a rule, it may not be included in the daily beauty routine, but it is recommended to use it 2-3 times a week (depending on the instructions for use, the type, and condition of the skin). The main task of exfoliating agents is to gently remove dead skin cells and even out the skin microrelief. Look for products that contain gentle exfoliating ingredients and are not overly aggressive on the skin.
Recommended remedy: SA Softening Cleansing Gel for Dry Skin from CeraVe. The formula with ceramides, salicylic and hyaluronic acids delicately and gently exfoliates dry and uneven skin without damaging its protective barrier, which helps to retain moisture in it.
Even after figuring out how to choose the right facial care, do not forget that a healthy look, beauty, and youthfulness of the skin can depend not only on the correct selection and use of cosmetics but also on a large number of external factors.
As trite as this advice may sound, it really works. The basic principles of a healthy lifestyle help maintain a healthy looking skin:
- Try to drink plenty of clean water, avoiding excessive consumption of tea and coffee.
- It is recommended to eat at least 5 (fist-sized) servings of vegetables and fruits per day.
- It is worth refraining from smoking, drinking alcohol, fatty and overly salty foods.
- It is recommended to sleep in a cool (no higher than 21-22 C) and humid (40-60%) room, regularly clean the mattress and pillows, which accumulate particles of dead skin cells.
Use cosmetics with SPF not only during warm and sunny seasons. Ultraviolet rays can be very aggressive even in cloudy weather and can provoke not only sunburn but also dehydration, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging of the skin.
Please note that in urban environments it is necessary to use SPF protection – even if you move by car or spend a lot of time in office premises. Aggressive UV rays penetrate both car windows and office windows.
Of course, it is very difficult to properly care for your face at home without the help of properly selected cosmetics. In order to facilitate your choice, I would like to note that, for example, CeraVe cosmetics have the following advantages:
The products were created with the participation of dermatologists, some of whom have been evaluated by ECARF – the European Center for Allergy Research.
- Fragrance and paraben free.
- Contains moisturizing and firming ingredients that support the protective functions of the skin.
- Created with MVE technology, which is responsible for the consistent release of ingredients and the long-term effect of the cosmetic.
We hope that our detailed instructions and recommendations will help you understand how to take care of your skin, how to choose the right cosmetic products and in what sequence, and how to preserve the youthful appearance and beauty of your skin for a long time!
