Authorities have arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione in connection with the December 4th shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee recognized him from widely circulated surveillance images and alerted local law enforcement.
Upon his arrest, Mangione was found in possession of a 9mm “ghost gun” equipped with a silencer, clothing matching that of the suspected shooter, multiple fake identifications, and a handwritten manifesto criticizing the U.S. healthcare industry. The manifesto reportedly expressed grievances against corporate practices, suggesting a motive linked to dissatisfaction with the healthcare system.
Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan as he arrived for an investor conference. The assailant, described as a masked individual, fled the scene on a bicycle, prompting a multi-state manhunt. Investigators discovered that bullet casings at the crime scene were inscribed with messages critical of insurance practices, including the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose.”
Mangione, a Maryland native and University of Pennsylvania graduate with a background in engineering and computer science, had been working as a data engineer. Associates described him as a well-educated individual who had recently exhibited anti-corporate sentiments.
Following his arrest, Mangione faces charges related to illegal firearm possession in Pennsylvania. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is coordinating with Pennsylvania authorities to pursue extradition for charges connected to Thompson’s murder.
